I have a new athlon1.4GHz, 256DDR,NVidea GE2 400, with 98SE ( I got rid of ME - too buggy ) the system will hang with a black screen if left. The screen saver works for a while - then black screen. It then will not wake up if I move the mouse or hit a key . Monitor light still shows a video signal. Have to reset to recover ? ? ? ? ? ?

Try selecting No Screen Saver, then see if the problem persists. If you get no black screen, then it's the screen saver. Is there any sound from the fan in your PC when the black screen strikes ?

I've turned off power manage in the BIOS and in Windows too. The PC is still running (fan too) it just won't come back to life without a restart. I'll try the screensaver bit tho and reply later
Thanx

In the windows power management

i presume you set to "always on"

have you set the hard disk and monitor to "never"
lower down?

I've managed to track it down to the screen saver part of Windows. Seems that the machine IS running OK , if I Ctrl Alt Del I eventualy get the Close Progam box up and screen saver is highlighted as not responding. If I end it Windows pops up OK. It happens with after market screen savers too so it is (obviously) the hook they use to trigger screen saver behaviour in Win98 ??? How do I recover the correct behaviour to stop it doing this ???? Thanks to you all for your previous suggestions as even tho they ended up as not being the cause, they still taught me something !
