win98 workstations hold files open on NT server.

My windows 98 boxes access a winNT 4 server and open various databases and indexes in Visul Foxpro. after a period of time, the files start remaining open after the workstation has let them go, up to 30 seconds or more. How can I get this to stop? where do I look for the problem?
