Win98 wants password to print on 2000 machine? 1

Hi-
We are running a Win2k network with a mix of Win2k and Win98 machines. I want the win98 stations to be able to print to other stations on the network. When I try to add the printer to the win98 machines I am asked for a password. Win98 will not accept any viable password.

Can someone please tell me exactly what this message means?
In particular: \ipc$

Resource: \\cronus\ipc$

It is perfectly OK to treat me like an idiot. I have been the admin on this system for less than a year and this is my first experience being an admin.

I had a problem similar to this, I downloaded the AD Client for 98 and seemed to resolve the problem. The client is on the 2000 CD. Hewissa

In a workgroup type share, like what you just described, the other 2000 machine looks at the account being used locally on the computer you are on (be it 2000, 98, NT...). If an account name exists with the same name and the same password, then everything works fine. i.e. bob on computer1 with password "fish" can connect the printer or other resources on computer2 if the account bob is there with the password "fish" on computer2. If the password is different, then computer2 is asking for the password it has for bob on computer2. If bob doesn't exist on computer2, then computer2 defaults to the guest account and its password. Its asking for the password to the guest account. Of course this is doing no good since the guest account is most likely dissabled and has no permissions to the printer. If you are trying to give access to the printer to anyone, reguardless of who they are, and don't want to be bothered with this problem ever again in your lifetime, then you can activate the guest account on computer2 and give it Share and NTFS permissions to the printer. Leave the password blank too. Now you can connect it to any computer on your network reguardless of who you are (in other words, it will share just like a 98 machine does). 2000 pro will limit it to 10 connections. The first 10 computers can print all day as many times as they want but the 11th computer that tries to print to it will be denied access to it. I know 95 has no such limitation, I'm not sure about 98. Since you are sharing from a 2000 computer, you can load the 98 driver set as an additional driver from the printer properties box. Then, any 98 computer you connect to the printer for the first time can retrieve the 98 driver from the 2000 computer for further use, saving you the trouble of having to load it on each 98 box.
