Hello!!!
I have tried to do this for 3 days and I now need help.
I have done this to 2 PC's with no problems but this one is just giving me tonnnns of problems.

I have a Pentium III 800 Pc that had windows 98 on it. I tried to upgrade from the window2000 cd but could not. This is what I did.
1. Fdisk the hard drive form a win98 boot disk
2. Partition the hard drive
3. reformat the c:\ drive.... a:\ format c:
4. took the disk out and restarted the PC.
..... nothing happened the cursor is at the top left blinking.

5. restarted PC with win98 boot disk.
6. goto E:\ dir to view win2000 disk.
7. E:\ setup this tells me that it can not be done from dos.
8. E:\I386\winnt32 this tells me that it can not be done from dos.
9. E:\I386\winnt nothing happens....cursor blinking on line below and cdrom is not blinking, moving or making noice.

What to do?

Have you tried going into your BIOS and changing the boot options to first search for CD? That should make it so you can boot directly to the Win2K cd and start the installation.

Can you set your PC to boot from the CDROM in the BIOS? I think this may be a bit easier in getting it installed. If you boot from the 98 floppy and do a winnt to install, do it from the root of the CDROM and not the i386 folder. It may help (It may not). Let us know. James Collins

Thank you all for the quick responce...
I did try to set it up from changing the bios to boot from cd first....all I get is a black blank screen with a blinking cursor on top left corner. I looked at the CDROM and I did not see any activity. It all looks as if the CDROM is not working. If I boot from the boot disk I am able to go to the E:\ drive and look into the CDROM dir. I have also changed the CDROM because I thought that it could be a problem with the CDROM it self but I get the same thing.

Did you cahnge the 2000 CD or the CDROM Drive? It could be an issue with the drive itsself. James Collins

It turned out to be a slave/master issue.
This person had installed a dvd player an it was designated as master also. I did not check this and I have learned my lesson. After I changed the pin to slave for the DVD player window 2000 was able to boot from the CDROM.

Cheers everyone......Thank you all.
