I am running a system with Win98 2nd edition. I just re-installed the OS and ran the hard drive through my main computer with the Win98 drive as a slave drive. No viruses. I put the Win 98 drive back in it's own tower and tried to download some applications such as McAfee Anti-virus 7.0 and Microsoft updates. It works fine through bootup and the downloading of files but as soon as it tries to install those files it keeps rebooting and then running a Scandisk. Any reason why this is doing this? Any ideas how to make it stop?

Was the AV program updated with the latest files?
Because the problem sure appears to be virus related.

Also, did you format and do a clean install, or did you just reinstall Windows over itself?
Even if you did the former, it's possible that the virus(assuming there is one) infected the MBR, which will require repartitioning the HD in order to get rid of it.

The AV in on the Master drive was up to date. I ran the recovery disk that reformatted the drive and re-installed the OS. It looks like I am going to have to wipe the entire drive then fdisk and reformat again. Unless there is another way?

I would just to be safe... Besides, you just reinstalled, and obviously something didn't come up clean (or some application that was loaded), I'd try it one more time.

you added this win 98 as a slave drive? there is a good possibility that it being a slave drive contracted a virus from the primary drive.. when you booted off the primary drive and something ran or moving files to win98 hdd then ran them.... just a thought or maybe i misunderstood the post.
