I have a 6 user network with three PC's running XP pro, two W2K pro and one Win98. One of the XP pro machines is acting as a file server to share documents.

When the Win98 machine connects to this machine, it tends to hang up both machines.

Any ideas.

Does one of them possibly have a virus or some sort of spyware on it? And maybe it is trying to access resources from the other machine, thus using up the processor/memory for both machines, thus locking them both up? Of course, this is just a guess..

What is it exactly doing when it freezes - is it just once there is a connection, or when a particular file or program is being accessed accross the network?

no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." John 14:6 KJV

Check for duplicate IPs.
Check for duplicate machine names (netbios names).

All machines are up to date on virus defs and routine scans. We use SpyBot and Ad-Aware.

IP address and names are different.

You do not even get a chance to open a file. When the 98 machine connects to the XP machine, both PC's stop.
