Win2K3 Servers hang after MS updates

Hello all,
I've got two Win2K3 Std. Ed. servers that are acting strangely after performing recommended MS updates. My primary got a single security update, while my secondary got SP1. (My primary also needs SP1, but I'm rather leary about doing it until I can get handle on this)

The systems are taking forever to "log off" during reboot, and then taking forever to get through the "Applying computer Settings" section of the splash screen during start up.

My primary server is also my backup system (DLT with Backup Exex 9.1). Since the update, I haven't been able to get a backup beyond the "Pre-processing" phase. Veritas has some suggestions for this, and I need to try them out, but the servers are my number one priority.

Any ideas as to what's happened?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Are you using Terminal Services? I have the login problem when signing on to terminal services. Research on the Microsoft site has a reference to the login problem but only as it relates to Windows XP ( I would guess that the problems are related deep down in the bowels of the OS. Microsoft recommends waiting until the next service pack unless you are severely affected by this problem.

Thanks Oldbuck,
The login/logoff hangups I can live with, because once they are up and running, they don't get bounced often. I'm more concerned with the backups failing to proceed. I haven't needed them yet, but I know once I'm exposed,I'll need them (thanks, mr. murphy).

I'm wondering if the SP1 may have knocked the IP on my secondary for a loop. I've had a hard time getting an internet connection from it.

I've got to spend more time on this.

thanks again,
Hobbes

I'm going to venture a guess that you're using APC UPS' with PowerChute?

If so, then this is a PowerChute Java security bug. You'll basically need to restart the affected servers in Safe mode, disable the APC services (or just uninstall PowerChute), and then restart normally.

Once restarted, you can download the current PowerChute and reinstall.

Some more info here:

Thanks, dkediger.

Yes, I am using APC UPS' with Powerchute. I'll give your suggestion a whirl.

Thanks again,
Hobbes

I agree with dkediger, APC is probably the cause of your problem. Had the same thing hit me too. Such a pain.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Regards,

Mark
