win2k-win98se network login challenge 2

i have just set up a small (2 computer) network in my home office and everything works the way i want it.
computer1=desktop win98se
computer2=laptop win2k pro
2 computers>router>high speed modem>internet
router allows laptop access to desktop and printer.

now the challenge: while i don't need to access the laptop from the desktop, it might be useful. BUT i cannot.
i am the struggling sysadmin so everything that was done or not is through me.

when i start the laptop i have a UN/PW only to deter thieves in the event they acquire my computer. i work from home as a consultant and take the laptop with me; i NEVER login to another network. from the desktop, the dialog box asks for password. the "hardcoded" item on the dialog box is 'RESOURCE: \\ComputerName\IPC$; the other is the password request. i have tried the following to no avail:

pw
un/pw
un\pw
ComputerName/pw
cn\pw
\\cn\pw

to further complicate the issue, i am now locked out from further attempts. i have scanned MyComputer | ControlPanel | AdministrativeTools but cannot find anything that will reset the login attempts. (scanned=looked without knowing where to start; non-detailed examination)

this is not a vital issue, but not more of an itch that won't go away. any help would be much appreciated.

You need to login to your Windows 98SE machine with a username and password that exists on the Windows 2000 Pro laptop in order to access resources on it.

thanks for the speedy reply.
ok. i have created a login on the desktop identical to the login on the laptop. now i can see the computer, but nothing on it. i have set the C drive on the laptop to share with the default share name of C$ and maximum allowed user limit.

On the desktop, go to Start - Run - type "\\laptopname\C$" and click ok. You should get an Explorer window showing the contents of the C: drive on the laptop.

thanks serbtastic, that works, but that's only good for a one shot deal. if i login to the desktop, should i not be able to see the laptop contents via an exploring window of some sort?

this is more of an exercise than a need. at the moment i can see no reason why i would need to view the laptop from the desktop, but i would like to be prepared.

You could map a drive to the laptop - you will still need to authenticate, though - don't forget that not only do they have different operating systems, but they are not part of any domain which could sort out permissions and access for you.

The Start, Run, \\computer2\<sharedFolder> is the way remote resources are accessed. You could create a shortcut to do the same thing, or after you've mapped it, access it via Windows Explorer or My Computer

ahha. i have mapped drives before, so i understand that. so now i have 2 ways to handle the access: an instance and a more permanent solution.
