WIN2K server - Users can map drive even if not logged in

In the midst of PDC failures, in the form of a Compaq Proliant 1600 running Netware 5.0 I bought a Dell server and loaded WIN2K server on it and set up Active Directory. Now the PDC is dead. However users can still map the shared drive on the new server without logging into that server, ( which happens to be the WIN2K server running AD) Is there any way to force users to log in to the WIN2K box making that the only way they can view the shares? I am presuming that it might have something to do with my having installed AD and that I might have to use DCPROMO. If so do I have to enter all of the users all over again?

Thanks

The above is a little confusing! You say the PDC is dead - which PDC? Did you have another NT domain running? If so, how did you set up Active Directory - is this a new domain you're thinking of creating to replace you're old one?

The only reason I can think of as to why users can access the share without logging in is that the file and share permissions on it are set to Everyone (meaning no authentication is needed to gain access). If you change this to Authenticated Users, only people that have been logged on by the domain (or by a trusted domain) can gain access to the resources.

As to whether you will need to re-create all the users depends on the above - if you were running an NT domain and the PDC died and you have no BDC or backups, then yes, I'm afraid you will. If you still have the BDC, you can promote this to a PDC and then run Windows 2000 setup on it to promote the whole domain to an Active Directory domain.

If the PDC you mean was your new Active Directory domain and again, you had no other Active Directory domain controllers running and no backups, then again, yes you will need to re-create the users. If you have other domain controllers, you'll just need to seize the PDC FSMO role to one of your other domain controllers to get everything up and running normally again.

Cheers, Antony

The original PDC was the Netware server, which is now deceased. Evidently, when I set up the new server as "another server on the nework" AD set up the permissions as everyone. You have answered my question though. I need to set up all access to the shares as Authenticated users.
Thanks very much.

Cheers as well!
