Help there is a trojan on my machine I need to re-format my harddrive and reinstall windows, but I cant fdisk it since win2k has no dos. Please help me format so I can re-install Windows 2000. Thanks guys

There should be a recovery CD that comes with you PC.
Do you have that?? If so put that in the drive and restart your PC. Then follow the steps, it should be simple enough.

Can you not get into DOS?
If you go to start shut down, and restart the PC, on boot up with the 30sec count down, do you not have an option for DOS? Try pressing F8 at that screen for more options. Jay~

Sorry......me again!
but do you really need to reinstall Win2k???
What trojan do you have (If you know)? there is most likely a fix out on the web that will get rid of it...

If you dont know what trojan you have, post some info on it, like how you got it, what files are related to it etc...maybe we can help and eliminate the need to reformat? Jay~

I don't know what kinda install your running but no win2k doesnt have that as an option. w2k pro at least. No I don't know what kind of trojan is on my machine or I would look for the fix, but I know there definatly is one on my machines my second machine is easy to fix because i have dual boot on it win98/win2k therfore from the win98 side I can erase win2k then fdisk it But on this computer I made the mistake of only putting win2k on it. Its a compaq and the restore disk is of no use because the machine came with Win ME (Migraine Edition) I got the virus from a demo version of a game I downloaded from morpheus. I installed on both computers and gave to a friend and his norton caught it. Still trying to figure out why mine didnt. Guess I didn't update anyway i've scanned the original file and it still shows it being clean but I've seen the error on my friends. So how do you do a re-install of win2k?
I need to hurry and do this I need my computer back up
PLEASE HELP
i tried the win2k disk but all it tries is to fix win2k but of course nothing is wrong with win2k.
thanx

Have you tried letting the Win2K CD boot your machine? It should give you the option of deleting and formatting the partition. A+, N+, MCP

If you set the BIOS of the machine to boot from the CD-ROM and reboot with the win2k full version in the cd-rom it will say press any key to boot from cd .. press any key and then reinstall win2k.

If the Win2k cd is only an upgrade, return to factory settings using the ME restore cd that came with it, and then upgrade to 2K...

have you tried booting from the 2K cd??? Jay~

You can reformat/repartition with a win9x boot disk, go to fdisk and pick non dos partition and delete, you might have to do this a few times to reclaim the entire hard drive, also if you have a backup program like drive image it will change the format for you then you can fdisk it, I would suggest you download a the installation utility from your hard drive mfg, WD has Data lifeguard, Maxtor has MaxBlast Plus, etc. This will allow you to use their parttion/format program, and will clear everything up in minutes, my 60gig hd took less than 5 min to partion/format, compare this with fdisk which will take a little over an hour to do the same job.

PS get a good backup program then you won't have to go this route at all. Takes me 5 min to restore my hd.

Good Luck

Go to an online scanner and have it scan your machine.
If you have your anti-virus updated and it has not found the trojan i would suspect none are present.I have seen this warning a half dozen times have been told the anti-virus has quarantined the js exploit virus yet a full scan of the listed directory has failed to show the mentioned file.I suspect some one has written in a message to make the person wipe out their own hard drive to get rid of a non existant trojan.
If you insist on a reformat, boot with a w98 startup disk and remove the non DOS partitions through fdisk and then repartition and format.Or boot with the W2K cd and during a clean install it will allow the partitioning and formatting of the hard drive.
