I decided to switch from WinME to Win2k Pro so I started an upgrade, but it stops when it is "upgrading program and system settings". I think it might be because I did not upgrade my BIOS :~/. My question is will setup complete if I take my hard drive out and put it in my son's pc that is running WinXP? Or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thanks,

you should be able to take the hard disk and place it in another pc to do the install, however this will probable only cause more issues and it solves with the IDE driver issues.

Sometime when doing the upgrade or fresh install you should go into the bios and disable everything you don't need i.e. network etc and once you have installed the OS okay turn a few things on again at a time and let the OS install any new hardware it finds.

Thanks for the information. My son does not want me to mess with his machine [sadeyes], so he is going to take my machine to his computer class and let the instructor check it out.

Thanks again,

jdeane was completely on the mark in my experience. Just disable all extra devices, or even better remove them completely. Sometimes win2k can get fetched up on wierd drivers.

Recently purchased a used Laptop (Dell Latitude c810) and wanted to reinstall operating system. Windows 2000 Professional has blocked access to this area and the former user does not have the administrator password. Is there a default password or keystoke that will cicumvent this? I've tried boot floppy's, operating system CD-ROMS, etc. Any hints would be greatly appreciated.

is it a bios password or a win2k password?

if it is a bios password you need a proggie called killcmos, this will remove the bios password.

if it is win2k admin password there are several bootdisks based on linux that will allow you to change the ademin password, or a dos boot disk and delete the sam database which will wipe all local accounts.

Well, I am back! My son's instructor did not get to look at my computer so, I am back to square one.:-( Would it be possible to go back to ME without W2k not completing the install? As of right now, when I turn on my computer, it starts to load W2k and then asks for the setup disk to complete the install, if I cancel that, it comes up with another message talking about an error report and if I cancel that, it reboots again, if I put the disk in, it just keeps sticking at the same place each time. I am able to get to the CMOS settings, but I have not changed anything there. Is there an easy fix to my problem? [ponder]

Thanks,
