Help! I think I hosed a co-worker's computer.
My co-worker installed service pack 3 and did not back up his files. After the service pack he got the blue screen at startup. He was able to start up in safe mode.

I tried to "recover" from a win2k cd, but now it says it can not find the ntldr.

Of course the drive has important info and I can NOT just format and start again. We have been unable to install on top of the existing windows install, I believe due to security issues.

What do you suggest to get the data back and fix the operating system?

Thanks in advance.
Tim

If the computer states it is missing ntldr, try copying the ntldr file from the w2k cd onto a floppy, then copy the ntldr thats on the floppy to the problematic hard drive.

If not just take another drive, set it as a master, take the problem drive, set it to slave, boot up with the good drive and just transfer your files from the bad drive to the good drive, and reinstall w2k on the problem drive

A+,Net+,MCP

Can you boot from a (newly formatted) floppy that has ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini copied to it? If you can't access these file from hard drive, 1st 2 are on install CD (in \i386) and you can create other one in notepad:-

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect

(for installation on partition 1 of disk 1).

hi,
I faced the same problem. i just ran the setup again from the 2k cd and chose the repair existing installation and chose the fast option. i did not have an ERD.
