Win2k Master Browser 2

Can anyone give me suggestions on how to keep a Win2k Prof machine from thinking it is the master browser in a Windows NT Domain? I'm not sure what info you would need to tell me this so I'll just leave it at this for now. I have tried to do research on it but don't find any tips or help for a Win2k machine having this problem.

You may set the following key to IsDomainMaster = False
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters

I do suggest that you have ERD and backup of your registry before you make any modifications.

What about this maddog? After going to the link you provided and reading it I found out that the service in Win2k called Computer Browser is the service that goes out and looks at that MaintainServerList registry entry and determines what the computer will be. (master browser, backup browser, or browser client) Can I just stop that service to solve this problem or will stopping that service cause other problems? If I can do it that way I would feel alot better than having to go in and mess with the registry.

I believe that will work. It wont hurt anything to give it a try. If you have problems just turn the service back on. But I suspect you should be fine. Please let us (Tek-tips members) know if the solutions we provide are helpful to you. Not only do they help you but they may help others.

We disable the Computer Browser service on all of our corporate Win2K machines via Group Policy to limit the browser elections and network traffic. It won't cause any problems unless you have a subnet that doesn't have a server to act as the master browser. In this case you can just flip on the service on one of the computers to enable other users to gain a browse list from it.
