Win2k Installation Problem

During the initial steps of Win2k installation, I always encountered the exception screen related to the "pci.sys". I had tried the fresh install or upgrade from Win98. Both approachs stopped at the same steps with the exception screen about "pci.sys".

I believe that the exception happened after the file copying step but before the actual install steps.

My system only has 3 cards, 1 AGP video card, 1 ISA PnP network card, and 1 Adaptec PCI SCSI card (for one of the HD and CD-ROM).

Processor : 533MHz Celeron,
Memory : 256MB (PC100) SDRAM
Motherboard has built in sound card and USB controller.

Any suggestion regarding to this problem is appreciated.

Thanks,

Ching-Ho Cheng

Is the installation drive connected to the SCSI card. If so, are you hitting f6 during install to install the driver. If not, that is the very first step in the text portion of the installation. Just put the drivers on a floppy and the install program should find them.

No, the installation drive was connected to the IDE. I just downloaded the Win2k Adaptec driver for the SCSI card. I will try it again tonight.

What about the PnP ISA NIC card ? I couldn't find the Win2k driver for this NIC card from 3Com website. Win2k might not support ISA card, is that true ? Otherwise, I need to use a PCI NIC card.

Thanks,

I have used 3com ISA card before with win2k with no problem. If the install drive is not using the SCSI card, I would remove it during installation. Also, you should probably remove every other card as well (except the video of course.)

Thanks for your suggestion.

Last night, I used the correct driver for the 2930CU PCI SCSI card (from adaptec), and still get the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED... pci.sys blue screen.

I use SCSI for the CD-ROM. If I have to remove it, I need to copy the whole Win2k CD to the hard drive first and then install from the C Drive.

I will give it a try, and let you know the outcome.

Thanks,

I finally figured out the problem. It was a memory error in blank 1 of the 128MB SDRAM. I ran a memory diagnostic program and found the error. I took out the bad memory chip and also disabled the "VGA use IRQ" from BIOS.

I re-ran Win2k setup program with the Win2k SCSI driver, everything ran fine.

Thanks for all the suggestions.
