I have 5 Win2k servers that will register normally with our Wins server but only at boot. Thereafter the Wins info on our Wins server is cached only and eventually times out.

I've applied the latest SP to the Wins server (NT4 SP6A) and to the 2k servers (SP 3). I've also tried NBTSTAT -RR which is supposed to re-register the client with the Wins server but to no avail (the expiration date in the Wins database does not increment). NBTSTAT -RR replies with "The NetBIOS names registered by this computer have been refreshed".

I've searched extensively on deja.com (groups.google.com) but have found little that applies directly. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

Is the WINS server Windows 2000 server?
Are you sure that you didn't install also on those client servers WINS service? If it is the renew will be made just after a restart. Gia Betiu

2K machines don't actively use WINS but DNS instead.

Check to see if your 9x and NT clients are registering with WINS, since they don't necessarily query DNS.

Do your servers have static ips? If so, satic map them in WINS. Hewissa

I have disabled the WINS service on the 2k servers and now a "nbtstat -RR" (correctly) causes them to re-register with the real Wins server. Looks like because the service was by default setup on all of the 2k servers, they thought they should ignore the Wins settings that I had configured them with.

It looks like the problem was that the servers were registering with the "real" Wins server once when they were rebooted and thereafter with themselves. The entries on the Wins server would eventually timeout.
