Any expert can give me a few tips on Configuring DNS on Win2k domain controller

thx

I'm not an expert, but the following is an example from my Win2K server study guide:

1. Select Start>Programs>Administrative Tools>DNS
2. The DNS window appears. Right-click your DNS server and select Configure the Server from the pop-up menu.
3. The Configure DNS Server Wizard starts.
4. The Root Server dialog box appears. In this dialog box, you indicate whether this is the first DNS server on your network or if your network already has a DNS server. If you choose the This Is the First DNS Server on This Network option, this computer becomes the root server. If you are cinfiguring DNS on a server in a network that is using the Active Directory, a DNS server will already be running. Make your selection and click Next.
5. The Forward Lookup Zone dialog box appears. Forward lookup zones are daatabase files that contain the DNS domain name-to-IP address mappings. Choose whether or not this file is created.
6. The Zone Type dialog box appears. In this dialog box, you specify the type of zone that is created.
7. If you chose to create a standard primary zone in the previous step, the Zone Name dialog box appears. This dialog box allows you to specify the name of the zone. The zone name should be your registered domain name. Enter a name and click the Next button.
8. The Zone File dialog box appears. This dialog box allows you to create a new file for the zone or to use an existing file that may have been copied from another computer. After you make your selection, click the Next button.
9. The Reverse Lookup Zone dialog box appears. A reverse lookup zone file is used to translate IP addresses to DNS names. If you want people to access your DNS server via an IP address select Yes, otherwise select No, Do Not Create a Reverse Lookup Zone option. Click the Next button.
10. The Completing the Configure the DNS Server Wizard dialog box appears. If all the information is correct, click the Finish button.

Like I said, I'm not an expert, but I hope this helped. :)

Hungster,

Are your workstations configured with the address of your DNS server?
Are your DNS servers zones configured to accept dynamic updates?

i don't have any workstation connecting to that server yet
trying out thing in my lab.

it is dynamic updates

Ok, so you have one Server that has been promoted to a Domain Controller, right? Currenly no workstations connected to it...

Do you have the DNS of that Server pointing to itself?

Is this the only DC in the Domain?

Patty
