WIN2K DC Demoted

Good Day.

Here is my story. I am currently in the process of implementing AD here. I built a second NT BDC, promoted to PDC, and upgraded. AD setup went fine, and all was looking good, accounts and such were replicating fine between DC's. The WIN2K box was listed as the PDC in the Server Manager on all of the NT DC's.

I came in to find that the WIN2K DC had been demoted in Server Manager, to a BDC, and now the WIN2k DC and the NT DC's arent replicating.

Should I start from scratch, run DCPromo to remove the WIN2K DC, and start fresh, or is there a way to get these machine synch'ing again?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I had a similar problem, and I started from scratch. Seemed easy enough. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

were you operating in a single domain???

thanks for the prompt reply, btw.

Correct. Total of 3 dc's. One had the hard drive crash. Had to rebuild it, but I was getting all kinds of error messages on my other 2. Ran dcpromo to promte it, then dcpromo to demote it so the error messages would stop. Know it's not the same case as your's, but very similar. Good luck. Glen A. Johnson

I have a similar problem...

But I created a new DC on a new domain. I did this because I dont know if the first DC on a seperate domain was installed properly... It has AD but the DNS doesnt have any forward and reverse lookup... I tried to make the new server a secondary server but they cant see each other... I think the first server is totally chaotic.

I tried to replicated AD from the old server to the new server but it wont work. Even use the AD Administrator Tool still didnt work...

So i guess i will do the same process what Glenn did tin order to make this work...

I'll let you know...
