WIN2000 server internet problem

I have a bizzare problem.

We have a WIN2000 server with both WIN2000 and WIN98 clients linked. There is no problem whatso ever with the clients connecting to the shared directory's and folders, but connecting the WIN98 clients to the internet is a different story.

Once a client has logged on, their folders are available straight away, but they do not have any internet activity (browsing or e-mail), but as soon as they just re-start their PC and log on again, the internet activities then become available ! Its as though the PC needs a kick-start !
I'm at a loss as to why the computers need to be re-started to connect to the net.
The DHCP leases are set to expire after 8hrs.

Any help would be grateful

Thanks

james

The leases are set to expire after 1 day, but wouldn't that effect all connectivity, and not just the internet related issues ?

Try setting them not to expire and see what happens. Glen A. Johnson

Depends. What protocols/clients do you have loaded on the 98 workstations and the server?
In your original post, you said you had an 8 hr. expiration, is that right, or is it one day?
Try what Glen suggests, or at least make the lease a couple of days so we can rule out this theory...

I set the leases not to expire....same problem.

I did however try the IPrelease and renew. This worked, but is still confusing me as to why (its still like the PC needs a kick start!), and I can't go round and ask 40 users to do this IPrelease and renew....its just not the way it should work, is it ?

I have a cable modem. Sometimes when I start my pc, the cable companies software does not find my nic. I don't know why, and niether do they. Whenever I can't get on the internet because there software doesn't work, I just hit the batch file I mentioned earlier, and I'm on within seconds. I haven't spent a lot of time worrying about it because I figure this is there problem to figure out. I pay them monthly for service, they can figure it out. This sounds like a similar problem. Try this out on a 98 machine and see what happens. What happens with ipconfig /all? Anything different? Glen A. Johnson
