Win2000 pro stuck

Hi All:

I reinstalled a gateway computer orginially with xpp, with win2000, install the office, and all the drivers provided by the Gateway people,

after I installed Win2000pro sp2, I got a problem

whenever machine try to boot up, it is stuck on the "preparing network connection ....." screen, I tried to reboot to safe mode, it stopped at "starting up windows...."

no error or anything, how can I begin to troubleshoot this ?
will the recovery console help ? (how to use)

If your Network Interface Card (NIC) occupies a slot, try removing it and rebooting. If the PC boots, then you have a NIC-related driver issue.

its a built in, let me disable that

no ... I disabled the internal NIC, still does the same

Try unplugging your network connection until the logon screen appears, then plug it back in....
