I have a windows 2000 server with sp3 installed on it. It doesn't really host any applications, it's basically a file server. It is the only server that we have so it is also handling authentication of all the users as well. We have all win XP pro workstations with the latest updates.

My problem is that it is taking the workstations about 1.5 minutes to log on the network. I do not have any group polices being applied or anything like that. This is a brand new setup and all the pcs are new.

I have tried taking a pc and hooking it right up to the server with a cross over cable and it still takes the same amount of time so I know its not a hub or cabling issue. It also does have a significant delay when I try to ping the server by its name. I also setup dns on the server and that didn't seem to help either.

If I unplug the network cable the pcs login like that so I know its something between the server and workstations.

If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

is your DNS..XP tries to register services via DNS. you need to have a DNS server local. If you are using your ISP's DNS then this is the issue. You need to have your own dns and add a DNS Forwarder to forward all DNS request to your ISP's DNS server. This should fix your issue.

There is a problem that Microsoft has acknowleged and made a fix for. It sounds very much like what's happening to you. There is a KB article on it, but I don't have the number. If you want a patch though, you have call Microsoft, tell them the KB article # and they will give you a password. They still might charge you for the help. I belive they said the fix will be in the next service Pack for XP, if you are willing to wait.

We've had similar issues here and are debating calling them.

Hope this helps!

Why is XP running slower while logon

When I login into a Windows 2000 active directory from a new xp pro machine the login in is extremely slow. After logged on, everything works fine. But other windows versions don't have this problem.
A: This is almost like name resolution issue. Comparing with previous versions, XP is heavily dependent on DNS to find DC. If the DNS is configured incorrectly, XP will take longer time waiting for it to timeout before it tries using NetBIOS. Make sure
1) The DNS setup correct and have the server information.
2) XP clients can find the DNS server.
3) XP machine's DNS server is pointed to your internal DNS server rather than your ISP's DNS server.
4) Make sure no errors on logon scripts or GPO's that could be causing the delay.
5) Check any errors on event viewer.
6) Disable NetBIOS on the interfaces that client will not use.

The DNS issue IS your problem. All of the above steps need to be taken to resolve this issue.

The biggest is your local XP machines DNS entry. Ensure it's pointing locally to your on site DNS server.....
