I have to run my system using Win XP pro and Win 98 on dual boot because gaming performance in Win XP is poor. Does anyone know of any tweaks for XP gamers that make a real improvement, as I would prefer to run Win XP only. My general system spec is:

Asus A7V333 - Motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 2000+ - CPU
512mb 2100 DDR - Memory
Creative GF 4 Ti4600 - Video Card
Creative SB Live! 5.1 - Sound Card

I run all the latest drivers for all my hardware inc. DX 8.1. I also have the most recent BIOS flash available for my MB.

What games are you trying to run? And what do you mean by poor performance? Jennifer Sigman

are you sure you got the lates nvidia drivers, because i have almost the same setup and xp pro is just fine for games

also is your hdd 7200 rpm, it wont make that much difference but still it will make some

other than that, what the first guy asked is good too

Tried lots of drivers, currently running 28.32 for XP and 98se. I have IBM Deskstar 120GXP - 120mb h/d and it does run at 7200rpm. The effect I get in XP is tearing. Similar to turning off v-sync. Tried lots of refresh rates on my monitor, but stick with 85hz. It is just as happy at 100hz also. My monitor is IIyama VM pro 451 19". Gameplay does not slow at all, its just the way the screen is updated, nothing like as smooth as 98se.

interesting, now im not saying your stupid, but your sure all your bios settings are correct, like agp at 4x etc. and also if your not on a network and dont plan to be, i stopped a bunch of netorking crap from starting up (but dont ask me what) in the administrative tools, and that seemed to help good luck [afro]

Hi GoLdFiNgerR, good point about the BIOS, but everything is set up properly in that department, including aperture size, fast writes etc. As for the network stuff, I have not done that, but will look into it. Thanks for the tip.

yeah, it helped mine, although it hsouldnt matter to tell yo the truth xp should run good anyways, but it still helps also, although i dont know about the truth behind this, but i read to reinstall xp AFTER you install your xp processor in order for xp pro to take full advantage of it, so maybee a reinstalation of the os, but look into that option more first since xp takes a while, and to find out the truth about it, [evil]

Right click on the game icon go to properties and check the compatibility tab. See what it is set to.

I'm running WinXP with a lesser 64mb Video Card than you are on a CrystalScan monitor that is over 4 years old and gaming is awesome...I've been running Jedi Knight 2, Morrowind 3, and Dungeon Seige (running at 800x600 32). I don't think it's the OS, there has to be a driver or setting that needs to be adjusted. Sorry I couldn't be more help, but I wanted to let you know what I'm running without problems to eliminate the OS as the issue. Mike Brown CCA

yeah i got a 32 mb geforce 2 gts and a 1.2 with 512 ddr rame and its fine so it may be an os issue, maybee a reinstall would be in order.?.?.? [evil]
