Win XP Password Change Damages Profile 1

I have Windows 2000 server running and a user using Windows XP and Office XP. It's a pretty new setup; we've only been up and running for maybe the past month or two.

The user in question was pretty much my first user, and as such, is the first user to get prompted that his password had expired. So he changed his password, received the dialog that his password had succesfully been changed, and suddenly his whole profile seems screwy.

His background has changed, the start menu button looks like graphically like the one from Win 2000 instead of XP, and Outlook won't start - instead it prompts him to send an error report to Microsoft. When I right click the Outlook icon and select Properties, I get a DLL error message that reads:

An exception has occurred while trying to run "Shell32.dll, Control_RunDLL C:\PROGRA~\COMMON~1\SYSTEM\MAPI\1033\mlcfg32.cpl

From the server, I have reset his password to the original and the profile on his machine is still abnormal. What has happened here?

This little problem of mine remains unsolved.

It's worth noting that this is, at least to my knowledge, supposed to be a local, non-roaming profile. But I checked Documents and Settings on the user's computer and I didn't see a folder called username.domain like I am used to seeing with my other users. I found that strange.

Also, I checked on the server in Active Directory Users and Groups that this user's profile path is left at the default setting.

Still baffled.

I don't think this had much to do with the password reset.

Go into start/programs/administrative tools/active directory users and computers. Find that user and open up it's properties. Check the profile tab and make sure there is no profile next to "profile path."

Also, make sure that under the Terminal Services tab that there also is not a profile path - at least for now. I have had a problem with win2k users that were getting the terminal services profile for some reason.

Next, log in as administrator onto that workstation and look again at the documents and settings folder. Delete any folder in there that has the user's name in it, even if it doesn't have the . domain after it. (I've never heard of a situation where there was no folder in there, but I guess it could happen.) If you do find a folder, rename it. Then, log back in as the user. You may then re-enter the path under the terminal services profile path only.

Yeah, I checked and there was nothing but the default blanks for both profile and terminal services.

I renamed the folder in Documents and Settings that contained the users profile information and relogged, creating a new profile. Then I put his files and settings from the old one into the new profile and all seems to be well. I even had him change his password again and no problem.

It was a strange occurrence, and so far, seems to have been an isolated incident of indeterminate origin. Sort of like my birth, but I won't get into that...
