I'd appreciate some help in configuring /
troubleshooting a home network.

I have three PCs.
First. Runs Win XP Pro.
I wish to use this as a server for the
home network & also to access internet
via internal modem.
Second. PII running Win98. I wish to connect this
to first Pc for file sharing, backup
& use when first PC busy or burning
CD's etc.
Third. PII laptop running Win98. I don't need
this on the network. Might be nice
later but low on the priority list.

I'm pretty sure the cabling is ok & network cards
work ok ( see later)

Background.
-----------

The network was ok for about 3 months, then last
year had some hardware probs ( CD burner carked it).
& I couldn't find my xp pro install CD ( cursed later
when I found it in the CD drive - real SNAFU.

XP broke ( i forget the exact messages ) & i had to
do a repair ( using a different - ie later version
SP1 ? of Xp Pro). Also have had to remove viruses,
spyware, adaware. Therefore i've changed services
running, etc & used msconfig.

I eventually got XP back but without the network. I
tried all sorts of fixes including setting domains etc.
I think now that I really need to remove domain settings
and revert back to a workgroup. ( I'm still learning
Xp - if you hadn't guessed that).

I have been trying various newsgroups, the microsoft
knowledge base articles, google searches, etc to find
what I have broken & how to fix it.

I've used diagnostic tools etc as per knowledge base article
314067 but my problem is that I dont know how to interpret
them.

From memory I had to disable the 'Norton personal firewall'
before running these tests.

The tests show me that the network cards etc & cabling are ok.

I've also run the Manual Troubleshooting scan/test 'netsh diag gui'

I've included some of the results below. Maybe you blokes can point
me to the solution for my problem

Regards

Ian C

Ping the IP address of a remote host to verify that you can communicate through a router. Use the following
command: ping IP address of remote host

*** as noted above this works ***

*** when i ping 'athlon' from the Win98 pc,

An unsuccessful ping at this stage can indicate that the remote host is not responding or that there is a problem
in the network hardware between computers. Use Ping again but to a different remote host, to
eliminate the first possibility.

Ping the host name of a remote host to verify that you can resolve a remote host name. Use the following
command: ping Host name of remote host

Ping uses name resolution to resolve a computer name into an IP address. Therefore, if pinging by IP address
succeeds but pinging by name does not succeed, the problem is host name resolution, not network
connectivity. Check to ensure that DNS server addresses are configured for the computer, either
manually in the properties of TCP/IP, or assigned automatically. If DNS server addresses are listed
when you check through the use of "ipconfig /all", then try pinging the server addresses to ensure
that they are accessible.

*** i think this is the area where my problems occur.

i get a little confused with domain/passwords etc issues & DNS & lmhosts &
Netbios over TCP/Ip etc & how I should configure all/some of these items
& which ones matter for my little network

i'll attach more outputs from some of the utilities. I forget which utilities but
the network guys should recognise them.

The original workgroup was called CHRIS ( after the bloke who built the pc for me).
i may have confused this with domains etc & have domains CHRIS and/or ATHLON ?

Wow.

Your ICS service is doing its DHCP job, and your route table looks clean (thank you by the way, for including it)

So why is it not working?

The best advice I can give you is to purchse a broadband router from Linksys, D-link, SMC, or similar brands.

Having given my best advice, there a bunch of reasons that ICS is not working for you:

. take control of the Node type for your ICS Host.
This MS KB article will apply for Win9x and XP:
. There are some less than obvious things that can effect a manually configured ICS Host or client:

Best wishes,

Hi Bill,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

As to Y it's not working...

Network diagnostics show me the "user" as Athlon\Ian.
So even tho I've set the pc for a workgroup "CHRIS", I
think there are shreds of previous users (CHRIS who set the PC up originally as Administrator, Guest etc).
1. So maybe passwords / users / policy ?
2. Maybe I've stopped an service required by networking
when I was trying to remove spyware, adaware, viruses, etc.

I'll look at routers etc, but the network did work for about a month, & I assume the reason it doesn't work
is that I fiddled with it / domains / workgroups etc
when the network stopped working.

I'll have a look at the MS knowledgeBase articles.

Thanks again for your help.

Please make the node type change I suggested above, and then apply the utility discussed in faq779-4625

I'm having similar problems after having to rebuild my XP system. The disc controller went mad and crunched both RAID 1 discs! The system was rebuilt from scratch, reformatting both discs. Previously, it was networked to a Win98 laptop for over a year without any problems. However, I can't get them them to connect after rebuilding the XP system. I've tried every combination that I can think of.

The only thing that I can think of is that there is someting in the XP Service Packs and latest security fixes that I have applied which has caused problems. Any ideas?

Hi Bill.

I changed the node type (win 98 client) to "8".

Also, went through FAQ779-4625, downloaded the zip file,
unzipped ran it. Fiddled with host names etc, and now
the network is working. I also looked at the other
MS knowledge based stuff and a few reboots later everything works.
I cannot remember the exact sequence of events but certainly at some stage it all started to work.

Thanks again, [ ta muchley ]
