I recently re-installed windows XP in my laptop and it now shows a device manager error code 10. I have tried re-installing the driver for the C-media AC97 but it still has a problem.
The hardware worked perfectly fine prior to using the restoration disc.

Any ideas ?

It sounds like you have installed the wrong driver for your device. Try the manufacturer's site and see if you can get an updated driver.

Device Manager Error Codes.

If you experience problems with a device, you can use Device Manager to troubleshoot the problem. Device Manager displays a device tree that includes all devices configured for your system. If there is a problem with a device, it is marked with a yellow exclamation point. If a device is disabled, it is marked with a red "X" Device Manager error codes are provided to aid in troubleshooting problems with devices.

In Device Manager, double-click a device to display its property sheet. Right-click a device to display a menu that allows you to update or uninstall drivers, scan for hardware changes, and display the property sheet of a device. Device Manager also allows you to enable or disable devices, troubleshoot problems with devices, roll back the installed driver to the previously installed driver, and change the resources that are assigned to devices.

The General tab of the device property sheet contains the device status. If there is a problem with the device, an error message and code appear in the device status area.

On the General Properties tab of the device, click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooting wizard.

Hi,

First of all thanks for taking the time to reply. I have tried all the steps you mentioned and still I am getting the error code 10 ?

I am completely stumped on this. I have contacted Northgate directly but they will most likely tell me to piss off as the warranty just ran out.

This laptop has been really dependable till now and it's the first time I have tried to use the restoration disc supplied. Maybe I should go through it all again and see what happens ?

I am open to any suggestion for what to do next ?

Hi thanks for thr suggestion. The forum shows lots of other users with similar problems to mine but offers no solution.
Thanks for trying to help !

Hi,

I'm still not getting anywhere with this problem at all. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, updating drivers etc and nothing seems to work. I have downloaded several versions of the AC97 driver without ant luck. Does anyone have any further ideas at all with this ?

start > run DXDIAG
run tests
if necessary - new directX

I had this problem on a win 2000 installation on a Gigabyte GA-7S748 motherboard, and solved it using the driver available at
There seem to be more driver versions than you could shake a stick at available at different sites, including not only driverguide.com and suchlike, but the motherboard sites, and the originators, and Try the mobo sites first, then these two, then all the others. Best of luck.
