Hi All,
For the Windows NT Server here,We have to upgrade from
Service Pack 4 High Bit Encryption to Service Pack 6 High Bit Encryption.

We downloaded from microsoft.com the file 'sp6symi.exe' which is around 53 mb.We were expecting that files will be extracted to windows directory and some changes in the system files will be done when we run the exe file.

When we run the exe file, its asking a destination directory(default is current directory)and copies 2 folders with details as below:

joyport(30.4 kb size)---2 files, 3 subfolders
symbols(206 mb) ---952 files, 17 sub folders

Where to move these files and whats the solution???
Thanks in Advance.

matrix234,

This seems to be the symbols library, not the service pack. I've never had to deal with symbol libraries so I don't really know anything about them. I think the service pack file you're looking for is named "SP6I386.EXE" although mine (US language) is named "NTSP6a 128bit.EXE". Perhaps you're in another country? If so, I'd look around for the first file I mentioned or if you'd let us know where you are maybe someone from your country can help.

Don't forget to apply all critical security updates that were released since SP6a after applying the service pack itself.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Ken

Thank U very much Ken for ur Response.Actually from the microsoft.com site i downloaded 3 files as follows

sp6i386.exe===> 34 MB (SP6a standard Encryption )
sp6patch_i386.exe=> 454 KB
sp6symi.exe=======> 53.2 MB(Sp6a High Bit Encryption(128 bit))

Since we already had Sp 4 High Bit encryption installed, we can't use the first file in this case.As second is the patch for the first file, we are left with only the third file.I searched a lot and i could'nt find any other files.
The file u mentioned "NTSP6a 128bit.EXE" might be the right one.Give me the URL, so that we can download.We are from India.

Actually we are asked to apply a security patch, but since that patch need atleast NT Service Pack 6, we are in the process of installing.

You can try here: but keep in mind that this is the english version. I don't have any experience with foreign language installations so I'm not positive this will work for you, but it is the one I'm currently running. I do know that 128 bit encryption was not available for export when it was first released but if I remember correctly, I think it has since been released world-wide or nearly so anyway.

Also, you may want to take a look at the NT 4.0 Server download page located here:

Do be sure and read the release notes on any service pack or security packs before you install them as there are sometimes problems with certain configurations.

It would be nice if someone here from India who has successfully installed SP6a would post a message letting you know how they did it.

Hope this helps and good luck! (be sure to get a complete back up just in case)

Regards,
Ken

Hello Matrix, did you ever sort out your problem? I downloaded the same file, sp6symi.exe, which is the service pack 6a system files for intel based processors. My problem is, there are no installation instructions, and the app prompts for a directory to extract all the files.

Do you have any solutions? Thanks, RJ.

Matrix, if you don't have the NT Server edition, that file is not for you. Delete it, or upgrade to the NT 4 Server edition. That is what I found was my problem. RJ.

Thanks kgoods (MIS) for ur info. But the file u are specifying is not the wanted one.Anyway i got the Sp6a in a cd and upgraded successfully.

Hello RJ(2504756698),
The file 'sp6symi.exe' was not the right one as told by KGOODS, its just symbols library which is not required for The link u gave " is for terminal server edition which is not for us as we are not using terminals.

Matrix234,
Sorry that file/link didn't work for you. Glad you got it taken care of.

Wish I could have been more help.

On another note... you may want to checkout hfnetchk (do a google search) and run it against your SP6a patched box. It will let you know which of the many security patches that have been released since SP6a are not on the box.

Kind regards,
Ken
