Hi,

According to AOL, I may have an issue with the networking side of WIndows ME which is resulting in me being unable to connect to AOL via by DSL broadband service.
They tell me there is an issue with WinSock and networking needs reinstalled on this PC.

Does this make sense to anyone out there and doe sit sould correct and is it easy enough to do this using the original DELL disks that came with the PC ?

Many thanks in advance

It's been a while, but I believe if you go to add/remove programs ~ Windows Setup

Uninstall Communication
Reboot
Reinstall Communication

You should be fine

If that doesn't do it, you can go into your network properties (where you see Client for Microsoft Networks, TCP/IP, etc) and remove/readd them with a reboot in between. Just be sure to record all your settings.

You may want to uninstall AOL before doing so, then reinstall it after you've rebuilt the network stack.

Found this site on a quick search:

It has some nice screenshots, although you may or may not want to use the same settings and clients/protocols that they use.

I'd also disable any firwalls you may have running.. (actually I'd try that first, that could be your problem)

Unless Ad-aware SE has a built in firewall then there is not one installed.
But it does seem that after I ran Ad-aware that the connection went from a bad intermittent problem to now not at all.
But now that AOL has us delete the WInsock2, it did not recreate apparently so the networking side does need reinstalling

This site might help then:

Deleting Winsock is not a good idea unless you have a plan to replace it! Can't believe they did that to you and left you hanging...

I can, their scipt ran out and they were at a loss from there on.

If a service provider suggests deleting DLL's or disabling security to use their service (like firewalls) I strongly suggest you think about replacing them.

You need to go look in the control panel. Then look at network connections. With DSL youy should be able to reinstall the software and it should fix it. If it is AOL DSL DUMP IT!!
