Buy a copy of Charles Petzold's book:
Programming Windows, Fifth Edition.
ISBN: 157231995X
Be sure not to buy the one he wrote that uses C#. What you want is the one he wrote that uses the Win32 API.
I learned Windows programming off the 2nd edition, and the book was a tremendous help. Keep in mind that the code samples you see are meant for a beginner, and wouldn't be used in a real production system.
