This is stumping me. My mother installed Quicken 2003 on her computer, a P2 300, and everything went OK until she tried to get it to connect to the Internet to update her investments and stuff. After a day, the program wouldn't even run normally, and now she can shut down the machine. She uninstalled Quicken and it's still won't shut down.

I went over there to see what was going on, and the instant before you'd think Windows would shut down, a blue screen pops up, but is gone before you can read it because the computer reboots itself instead of turning off. It doesn't seem to be a BSOD, but one of those "System is unstable" or something, because the flash of text is in the middle of the screen, not at the top.

Any suggestions? I can't find anything wrong, and reinstalling Windows on this machine will be a pain in the butt, involving taking the hard drive out of the machine and taking it to another (this is the one that wouldn't load Windows on it's own because of the P2 issue). Jennifer Sigman

210MB of available hard disk space required to install the Basic version, 240MB for the Deluxe version, 250MB for the Premier version, and 260 MB for the Home and Business version.
Microsoft® Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.5 (with 128-bit encryption) is required to use online features.
Must use Microsoft® Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, or Windows® XP as your Operating System.
16-bit color SVGA or better video resolution recommended, 256 color VGA minimum.
Sound card and speakers are required to hear program sounds or video narrations.
2x CD-ROM or faster is required for installation, 4x or faster to view multimedia files.
Works with any printer supported by Microsoft Windows 95, 98, ME, 2000, or Windows XP.
Internet access is required for all online features, including online banking and bill payment.

Did the PC meet these?? Maybe run RegClean and clean up the registry? (or scanreg/restore)

Jim

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

Jim - Yup, it meets all those, except for maybe the IE version... I'll have to check that part. Thanks.

Accessdabbler - Whenever I tried to load Windows 98se onto this p2 machine, it would load, then on the first restart wouldn't find a file. I looked it up and found others who had the same issue, but no real solution except to load the hard drive on another machine. As soon as I can convince her to quit tripping through the device manager and other settings in safe mode, I'll get her to shut down the machine and see what happens. Jennifer Sigman

OK... it shuts down fine in Safe Mode. Not sure what else to look for at the moment. Thanks. Jennifer Sigman

Is there a high-speed connection to the internet available? Even if you're over dial-up, I strongly recommend going out to Windows Update and installing all critical updates ASAP.

Does it shutdown properly in Normal Mode if you CTRL-ALT-DEL and "end task" on everything except Explorer first??

This is just a thought, once was a problem on my machine with win98se, if you have Norton anti virus it tries to scan a;floppy drive on shut down and would hang. just a thought. Probably not your problem thou. LOL PEARL

Whilst everyone tries to fix it, how about writing a shortcut shutdown from the desktop?

Right click desktop and choose NEW-SHORTCUT. In the command line cut and paste the following:

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL.EXE user.exe,exitwindows

APPLY-OK.

See if that works whilst we ponder your plight. Error! Keyboard not attached. Press F1 to continue

I was going to say the same thing as kilowhat. Norton did mess up the shutdown with my 98 machine on try to scan the floppy on shutdown and a blue screen appeared for me. Once disabling the floppy scan on shutdown I did not have any more problems. I am not saying this is it but never hurts to try.

Control Panel power settings should have no power down or wake on states, hibernation either.
BIOS should also have no wake on states, power down...power off, stays off...you know the routine.
More of the machines what won't shut down, (that I've seen) have incorrect settings in either/both of these places.
BUT, with Safe Mode shutdown working, that indicates that a program in Startup under msconfig is likely causing it.

There are pages of win98se shutdown problems on the Microsoft website. give it a look might get lucky.

cdogg - Updated everything, still have the problem. Thanks, tho.

killowhat - Thanks for the suggestion, but she's running McAfee.

gargouille - I'm starting to think that same about something in the startup as well. Tomorrow when I head over there I'll trip through msconfig and take out what I don't recognize.

crustyoldbloke - I'll try that shortcut tomorrow and see if that works, thanks! Jennifer Sigman

go to microsoft and search for win98se shutdown problems and solutions. LOL PEARL

Jennifer,
Sorry to hear the update didn't help. On the bright side, it has less bugs than it did before!
[thumbsup2]

Anyway...

I would have to agree with gargouille at this point. Sounds like the power management settings under Windows or in the BIOS are causing the problem. Try disabling both as test. If that doesn't make a difference, then it must be software problem as everyone else suspected. Try the end task procedure I mentioned earlier and leave only Explorer running. Then shutdown normally. Does that work?

Hi JennITChick,

Having uninstalled the app and the problem is still there, I would have shutdown and booted to the command prompt and entered;

scanreg /restore

and restored a version of the registry prior to the actual installation...you may still have time to do that, hopefully.

Regards. Booting your machine seldom does it any favours.

Ding-ding-ding-ding, gargouille gets the prize! ;-)

Quicken had dumped a ton of garbage into the startup, also found that parts of McAfee were in there twice. Cleaned it up, and lo and behold it shuts down! Thanks! Jennifer Sigman
