Apologies for this one... daughter number 4 wants a computer so I found an older computer (1999) which had some Win 98 loaded into c:\windows

When I turned on the computer I got the Win 98 splash screen and then the old DOD prompt so then I had to cd\windows then ran I ran win and got a system.ini problem.

I found an old sytem.ini and installed it and then I got a VFAT fatal error, system halted...

I have a Win 98 SE disk but I cant get the cd rom drive to work so I cannot install.

OK so my question...

Can some one provide some advise as to how I might boot up the cd Rom ...ie is there some easy direction to get the machine to see the cd-rom.... hopefully then I can run the Win 98 SE and have a fresh install.

Thanks in advance.

John

I suppose alternatively if someone knows how to get past the VFAT error....

try to get a win98 boot floppy from someone. when u boot from that floppy u get an option for booting with cd rom support.

You wont believe this, but I just wiped an old boot disk yesterday!!! I found it said "who in the hell needs this"

and formatted and copied some .jpgs onto it... Aaggggghh!

OK thanks all

Ajax, I found an even older Win98 machine in the garage.. I found some seriously old hardware and made a startup disk... transferred the startup disk to the Newer Machine... and rebooted with the startup disk..

I selected boot with cd assistance.. and I now have a DOS screen and d: drive (the old RAMDRIVE) and the e: drive available...

So I type e:\setup.exe.. and I get Windows is required for this program. ...

I better check the disk... hold on for a second.................

OK win 98 SE Updates .. is that the correct disk ?

Or am I still missing something ?

is it the Full installation cd or just the updates cd?

What does the dir command on the cd drive show u? if possible just copy and paste the output of the dir command on your next message.

OK all solved.. great solution night..

Ajax and all thanks for your help and support...

The bad news is the disk is just an update

the good news is that..

It now works... the FAQ helped a lot --> thread615-607444

This solved the VFAT problem.. which turned out to be the rate limiting step..

THANKS TO ALL
