Hi i manage a number of windows 98 se workstations at a school they are networked to a win nt 4 server as domain controller and win 2000 isa server as a proxy web cache server they also run ranger security which does all the internet blocking and that .The problem is a few kids have found that if they log on as normal then open up internet explorer and as it is opening log off quick internet explorer stays open with the log on box in the middle of the screen which they then drag to the bottom of the screen then they have full internet access with no blocking or monitoring is this a win 98 bug ? and how to fix?
any help plz thanks

Hey Mike:
interesting problem you have there....
Could you provide some more details though?
Are latest service paks installed for all operating systems
and for internet explorer?
What version of IE are you using?

there could be a couple of issues that you may have to deal with, as when you "log off" the process is "supposed" to close everything
something to look at while you wait for answers and to possibly ask that same question would be the newsgroup from microsoft dealing with Internet explorer. that link is included here.

Novell has this same issue, but it's a simple fix

Hi Dlusional i am new to these systems but they have ie6 on and i downloaded all patches and fixes and service packs i could find and installed them but still the same like you say if you do it slow it shuts down all applications put fast log off using keys leaves ie6 running fine ??

This is real simple to fix... Tell the kids not to logoff with windows open. I know kids sometimes have mental issues, but its not too hard to click the big X in the top right hand corner before logging off.

Sure, as if they're going to listen, just because you've told them. The idea is that they've figured out a way around the security so they can probably browse pron sites from the school computers, and Mikejay is trying to prevent that. Cheers,
Jim

I came across this link that "may" or may not help out
i suspect your kids are cancelling instead of logging on/then off.

Scroll down to Bypassing Logon

I'll include basically what's written there.....here.

It's got a file that's been made to force shutdown, so you'll have to go to that link and download it.
don't know if this will help or not, and will keep looking around in my travels

Bypassing logon dialogue
What's the point of networking machines, providing users with home areas, and putting a logon dialogue in place if users can bypass all that by selecting "Cancel"? They are then left with no access to their home area and end up trampling all over drive C. Windows NT client machines force you to log on before you can use the machine, but Windows 95/98 machines can let you bypass the logon dialogue.

I solved this problem by writing a little utility ChkLogOn.exe that checked if the username was unset, and if so it shut the machine back down. Rather brute force, but it works. I put this in the C:\Windows\System directory of all our Windows 95/98 machines and put a shortcut in C:\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup to run it.

Hi thanks for the info i asked the head of i.t if i could do away with the log off option so they had to restart or shut down to log back on but he said it was to much messin about because they had been learnt to log off .The other thing is they have to log on or they get no access to the computer like nt because we use a product called lan ranger so they are not skipping log on they have showed me what to do you press the windows key then internet explore then windows the up arrow twice then enter twice this then logs you off as ie6 is loading then they have full access to the internet not to drives or anything else??

It sounds like you need to adjust the settings in the ranger security software. When they are logged in properly, I assume it is using their log-in IDs to determine what they can and cannot do. Check whether there are settings for when the person accessing has no login ID, if so block it completely. Alternatively, can you set it up to use IP Addresses instead?

Just out of curiosity, what happens if they don't log in at all, i.e. hit cancel on the login screen, or get Internet Explorer to run before loging in - you can probably test this by setting i.e. as the screen saver (another useful Windows bug - especially on NT4)!!

You can not log you will just keep getting the log in box you cant escape it but they did find that they could use the screensaver which is now fixed when they log out all aplications shut down including ranger but ie6 stays open because it is loading as windows shuts aplications down ..

still not got a solution the only way i have found to stop this is disable the windows key
