Hi,

I have a Gateway PII/400 MHZ and 128 MEG of RAM running on win98 2nd edition. My PC froze and locked up lately while surfing the net using IE 6.0. Noticeably when I used the mouse to scroll the page. This didn't happen all the time but once in a while. Noway I could get out of it except a hard reboot. One thing I had running at the time was Realplayer and Mcaffee virus checking running in the background.

Can someone help me out?

Thanks,
Bao

Try setting graphics hardware acceleration to NONE and see if the PC stops freezing on you. Out of curiosity is your graphcis card by ATI?

You will find it by right mouse click on My Computer and select Properties. Select the Perfomance tab and then Graphics.

I have the 3dfx Voodoo Banshee AGP card. Follow your suggestions, I turn the Graphic accelarator to none, and also shut off tasks in the startup tray, hopefully this will free up resources.

Thanks,

Bao

Myself and a couple people I know had the same issue after upgrading to IE 6.0. Nothing else on the PC changed and I was having all sorts of trouble. I formatted my drive and put on Win2K and stayed at IE 5.5. No problems since. I don't think it's just a coincidence. Mike Brown CCA

I agree with Mike, I upgraded a series of PC's to IE6.0 (most 98SE and couple Win2Kpro) and they all lock up when browsing. Some go for days, others cannot browse at all anymore. I re-applied all the service packs and still nothing. Suggest re-format and 5.5sr2.

Probably not related, but I just cured a similar problem with IE 5 on Win98SE. Turned out it was a component of PC-cillin virus scanner causing the problem, although the thing had been running happily for months with the scanner before the problem occurred. I can only assume that a recent update to the virus scanner program files initiated the problem. It was the "WebTrap" component and it was not enough to just disable this in the program options, the .exe file that runs it had to be removed.
