windows 98 keeps reverting to old desktop on boot up. Is there someway to delete old settings?

In my experience, the only time Windows will not retain existing display settings on bootup is when it has a problem displaying/rendering those settings, often because the display drivers are not correct or are corrupt. Have you tried updating/reinstalling?
I'm not aware of any place Windows stores old display settings.
Is it reverting back to 640x480 res and 256 color? Those are the defaults, and it may be helpful to know if its reverting to those rather than some other non-standard settings. Is background color and/or screensaver setting affected as well?

I thought I remebered a setting to save settings on exit, if this option was turned off it would not keep any of your custom settings, check using TweakUI, I think.
