I have a gateway 333 with windows 98. It has a dvd drive installed, which used to bee seen by the os. I am not sure what transpired to get the machine to where it is, as it is my kids machine, but...In safe mode the machine sees the cd (in the device manager), and the primary and secondary ide with no problems. When 98 is brought up normally the device manager flags the the primary and secondary ide with the exclamation point but tells me the device is working properly with no conflicts. I have cleared Cmos to no avail..any pointers before I toss the machine out the window? BTW to CD loads in the autoexecat boot time but can never be seen through "my computer" whether in safe mode or not.

Do the old "have Windows search for a better driver for this device" option in Device Manager...or remove and let it find them again on reboot.

pwrrpdc,
You probably have a drive using MS-DOS compatibility. Check my post in this other thread for suggestions:
thread602-447374

More than likely, removing the disk controller (main one above Primary and Secondary) will resolve the problem. The next time Windows loads, it will rebuild that component correctly...
