Hi all I have a small home network with three computers 2 are running Win 2k the other is 98 I have a problem when I try and access a sharted drive/folder on eith of the win 2k comps from the win 98 comp. it says I don't have permissions? I've looked through the permissions and set as much as poss to full access. When I try to connect from a win 2k - win 2k a box appears asking for name and password which I input and gain access but I don't get the box option on the win 98 comp. Would be gratful of any help thanks.

You need to enable the guest account on the W2K machine.

Maybe you thought of it already, but anyway:

In Win2K you've got to set the permissions two times:

- once on the share (Normally you set Everyone - Full Access)
- Once on the Security tab (I think, I work on the Dutch version) here you set the real permissions...

The Box that appears on the Win2k also shouldn't appear...

Windows 2000 is great but if you have never used an NT box before there are some things you have to keep in mind when networking with Win2K. You have to create a user profile for each computer that you want to access your Win2K machine for anyone to gain access and for you to gain access to others. You need to creat a user profile in users in the control panel like jdoe with no password unless you want one. Then on the Win 98 machine you need to change that to "Logon for Microsoft Network" in the Networking properties menu instead of the "Windows Logon". So when your Win 98 box boots up it should come up with a usernam and password screen before windows fullt starts. Here enter the exact user name you created on the Win2K box and press enter (unless you entered a password, then type the password in). Now you are autom. logged into your 2K machine and should be able to access it. Good luck!

Thanks netguyz that worked a treat, I'd forgot to set it to logon for microsoft network. I could still access the win 98 box from win 2k and just never thought to check that.

I'm glad that worked for yah! Any more questions shoot'em at me. If you could be so kind to hit the button that says that I helped you I would really appricate it! Thanks and have a great week!!
