We are purchasing a new blade server with no os and need to move os and data from old server to new server. New server hardware is different from old server. Please does anyone know the best approch to this issue?

Make sure you have a GOOD backup of the data on your current system. Load the OS and all service packs on the new server. As long as the partitions are larger than what you are restoring you should be fine.

I did not provide all info, sorry. Old server win 2000 server domain controller, ad, dhcp, dns and application data. Backup application is arcserve 9.0, with hp dlt one step disaster recovey. Old server is home made. New server is Dell 2650 with raid 5, three scisi drives. Arcserve people tell me that the disaster recovery backup will error out and not work. Do you think that restore will work? Thank you very much for responding.

I would install a new OS on the new server and bring it up as another DC. After the 2 servers replicate all of the users info and you setup DNS and DHCP again do a dcpromo on the old server.

Then do a restore on the new system. I did some similar with NT 4.0 to 2000 on 2 completely different servers, and was able to do a restore.

Good Luck

Will the resore keep permissions, securiy, etc? Thanks very much for everones help. Hope i can help you all at some point in time. God bless.

I think so, but before you do it maybe you should document all of the permissions.

If you use xcopy to transfer your files (other than OS) it will keep the permissions. Microsoft has articles on it I'm sure use the o-e-h-k-x switches. I use this when migrating data form one location to another.
