I have been backing up everyday and recently it does not backup or show an error for not backing up

Under Job Status it will say "Not in Time Window"

Also under Devices in Veritas Backup Exec V.9.0
it will show my tape drive as offline.
server-devices.JPG

Under My Computer --> Hardware --> Device Mgr Is shows the tape as enabled and working properly.
Archive Python 06408-XXX SCSI
PV 100T DDS4
Firmware V. 9050
The drive has power because I can insert and remove tapes.

I try to do a test run and it gives me an error of:

Media CheckOnline media check : Insufficient online or nearline media is available to start job.Overwrite media check: There is no media online or nearline that can be overwritten or the job has been marked append/terminate.Media check status : Failed

Can anyone offer any help?

Thanks.
Dee

Relabel the tape and make sure it's in the right Media group.

I have relabeled the tape and double checked it to be in Media Set 1.

It still has the Tape Drive as Offline though and I can't figure out why.

When I run a test I get:

Error category :
Job ErrorsError code: a0008703 HEX
Error description : Job failed running its test run. See logfile for details.

Media CheckOnline media check : Insufficient online or nearline media is available to start job.Overwrite media check: There is no media online or nearline that can be overwritten or the job has been marked append/terminate.Media check status : Failed

Right click on the drive and properties - configuration - uncheck the box to enable the drive for backup exec and click ok
Right click on the drive in devices and delete the drive.
Download and install the latest drivers for backup exec and it will prompt for a reboot and hit NO and power down the server completely off. Power up
The device hopefully will be online. If not check you system log for any errors related to the drive or scsi.
If the job still say not in time window - goto the job setup and edit the job - schedule - edit schedule details and set change the time to start by 1 min and submit

I have version 9 build 4367

I see a SP I can install but no driver updates for this build.

Now it is not allowing me to stop the services to install the SP...

I also get this message when I open Backup Exec.

"There are 2 administrators connected to the SERVER media server. Other administrators may be making changes.

That means there are admin consoles open someplace. You must be a a terminal server session. Bring up the task manager /process and make sure you can see all processes.
Kill bkupexec.exe instances.
Download Backup Exec 9.1, SP3 for 9.1, and Driver release 45 for 9.1. The version you on now Veritas wont touch. 9.1 is a free upgrade

I think I am doomed :)

I cannot kill all the backup exec processes.

And when I tried to install 9.1 - I let it go all night and it just says "server not responding" and I had to cancel the install.

I tried to do the Install Device Wizard.
Reinstalled drivers from help menu popup. It says that the device is already installed but does not show up under devices and I cannot add it.

When i view the Removable Storage MMC Under Physical Drives there is a red x over the drive and in properties it says "not present"

But in my system properties is shows it as ok.

It seems that I cannot install anything to the server.
Installs hang on "Preparing to install"

update to Windows installer 3.1 and reboot the server

I have checked the msi.dll and the version info says:
3.1.4000.2435,
the computer has Windows Installer 3.1 (v2) installed.

I ran at the command prompt

msiexec.exe /regserver

and I have got past the "preparing to install" window and now see the ..."a previous installation of backup exec".

Thanks for your help!

I will post back to see if it recognizes the tape drive after the software upgrade.

I was able to do the install and got to the end saying to reboot and run install again. I did that, run the install again and at the end get an message of:

"The windows installer service could not be accessed, this can occur if you are running windows in safe mode [which i am not] or if the WI is not correctly installed."

When I check the event log this is what I find:

I tried to uninstall / reinstall Windows Installer but it does not let me.

Try doing this, it will work. (backup exec 10.0)

1. On the main window== under 'Tools' Select 'Backup Exec Services'.
2. Select, 'Stop All Services' --> 'Start all services'.
3. Close.
4. GO to 'DEVICES' -->right click your device 'Dell 1' ---> enable.
5. right click again ----> inventory (assuming you have a tape inserted in the tape drive).
6. goto 'JOB MONITOR' --> watch the inventory done.
7. goto 'DEVICES', check if your media appears on the right side. If yes, GREAT, if not then NOT GREAT !
8. run the 'test run' on the backup job.

Hi,
I have got same problem as SPECIALE got on Veritas Tape Back-up EXEC problem.I would like to know how he manged to solve this issue?

Supposedly there is an update for APC Powerchute that fixes "monitoring and graceful shutdown of your system."

Link to Powerchute Update:

I am going to try and update this since I still cannot upgrade veritas. And my tape drive still does not show up.

Still having windows installer service problems.

//nabil0786
I cannot enable a device because one does not show up.

Tried the update for powerchute and that just would hang.

I went into safe mode and disabled the Powerchute services:
apcpbe server and apcpb agent.

Ran & Reinstalled drivers for the tape drive:
BackupExecTapeDeviceDriverInstall20050815_278408

After the reboot the veritas software recognized my tape drive again!

I think Powerchute has some glitches going on.

In veritas I have scheduled a backup for tonight - the test run was completed successfully.

I did not upgrade to version 9 yet.
I am waiting to see if the backup will complete tonight...

.Danielle.

Back up finally working again.

Maybe I'll try the upgrade to version 9.
