Several different computers I support have had Java seemingly stop working over the past few weeks and I'm not sure why. I'm hoping that someone can shed some light on this one.

All of the computers involved are W2Ksp4 and using Sun - Java v. 1.4.1_01. I've gone to the Microsoft knowledge base to find out if maybe there is a critical update that is being automaticly loaded that is preventing Sun-Java from loading correctly, but the knowledge base says that it's a problem with conflicting versions. The MS version was never loaded on these PCs and there have been no recent upgrades to any of the software or java applets occuring on these's PC that I can tell.

The only way I've been able to resolve this issue is the completely removing anything and everything Java related on the computer, including all registry entries and re-installing. That's the easy part. The mind-boggler for me is that this doesn't work until I've upgraded the computer's Direct X version to ver. 9. Seriously. I've tested this serveral times. They just seem to stop working. Java applets stop loadeding. Everything else works fine.

Wierd.

Thanks for your help.

Chris

1). Don't use "WHY !?" as a thread subject. Its not very helpful for others.

2) You have said nothing to help us help you.

Why is DirectX indeed ?
What is this applet doing ?
Where is it coming from ? Do you ahve access to the source code or is it a 3rd party product ?
What are the error messages ?
What does the JRE console say ?
If a 3rd party product - have they changed it recently ?
Have you changed you firewall or other relevant systems lately ?
Whats the common denominator ? What is the difference in the platform between it working & not working ? What has changed.

These things will help people resolve your issue.

well, that's about the most information that I have.

I'm not sure why Direct X is need at all. That's the confusing part.

The applet I'm refering to is a login to an Intranet site

I have no information about the source code

There are no error messages, it just hangs.

JRE console is frozen - no response

I don't belive anything has been change with the application servers. That's one of the first things I looked at.

I know it's not very helpful, I knew posting this would be a long shot.

What's changed? That's a mystery. The user's use these computer on the internet (even though they're no supposed to) I've been looking into different options to see what may have changed. MS updates? Application updates? Java conflict? Spyware? Maybe a user went to a different webstite that's using an older jersion of java or the MS version that trying to push. Sercurity settings? Maybe a user running cleaning software or a registry scanner.

I dunno, it's a long shot I know, but that' sall the info I have.
