Right, let's pretend your boss is a penny pinching b*st*rd, and has decided that (and I quote) "...I cannot believe that such a small development team with the wealth of experience we all have cannot manage the source without tools..."

I know I need VSS, particularly as the VFP project is just huge, and it would be a lot easier, but I need to come back to him, and give him "facts and figures", what VSS can do that makes life easier and more secure. Rollback, security, non-duplication, etc.

Is there a list of advantages of VSS to developers anywhere?

What about the Microsoft site they should have some guffins on Source Safe

Hi I would mention Version control of code and being able too freeze the code of versions of apps that were accepted and that it can be restored to at any time.

Furthermore going back to previous versions of code to find out where it went wrong or who did it.

Hope this helps

If you are developing software for external clients, then phrase it in a language that all bosses understand: to keep the customer happy.

Scenario: we spent weeks adding new features to our product in dozens of places, and one of those features works fine on our development and test machines, but blows up when running Windows NT 4 SP3 on a Compaq with 384Mb RAM. Since we have a major client that runs on that configuration, we can:

A) force them to go back to the previous release, or
B) spend weeks trying to undo every change you've made, or
C) using source control, selectively roll back certain changes and build a special release for the troubled client (estimated time: 2 hours).
