For the past couple of months our internet access has been getting slower and slower, mind you only the first part (the part that says 'resolving XX.com', then the rest of the T1 gets used and the page loads in the blink of an eye.
New pages can take 20 seconds to fully load, whereas the second time (and subsequent reloads) can take 2-3 seconds.
1. What is the culpret (DNS, MS fixes, sunspots?)
2. How do I fix/minimize ti?
3. Why has it been getting worse?

I'm a *nix-er at heart, but subject to M$ since taking on this co's config.

Seems like it'll be an easy fix. Got help?
Thanks
-Will

P.S.- Compared Explorer and turns out Firefox webbrowser has lagtime as well, but not nearly as much (I suspect Firefox doesnt wait as long to display what its got, before the whole page is in).
Maybe it means something.
Thanks.

the reason you get faster reponses after the first time is because your DNS server will cache the reponses it recieved earlier to allow faster access the next time

check your forwarder configuration and event viewer
you may notice erroneous warnings and/or errors in the DNS log saying the forwarder is not recursive...blah blah blah...this can slow response times, and fill up your router/gateway bandwidth, very quickly

you can try forwarding to 4.2.2.2 and see if that does the trick. Keep the others, but put 4.2.2.2 at the top of the list

If you are using root hints...stop, and try forwarders

what os is this anyway

almost got a paragraph there :)

Thanks ADgod,
How do I "check [my] forwarder configuration"?

Regarding EventViewer: since 1/31 the only entry in DNS is 'The DNS server wrote version XXX of zone'...blah blah blah.

How do I set forwarding, and is 4.2.2.2 just a dummy or where/what does it go/do?

How do I:
1. know if I am "using root hints"?
2. stop "using root hints"?

The OS is Win2K Server.

Thanks again,
Will

in the dnsmgmt.msc console on your dns server

if you have a "." zone, you are a root server

right click the server and go to properties

on the forwarders tab

be sure there is something listed

add 4.2.2.2 and use the arrows to move it to the top
