Why Is Copying Files from W2K Desktop Very Slow?

I've noticed that whenever I do a cut/copy & paste of a file from my W2K Prof Ed ws desktop, copy times are unbelievably slow. For example, moving a 10 meg file to another folder takes over three minutes. Copying the same file from the desktop to another folder inside Windows Explorer takes 1/2 a second. Do I have a bad setting somewhere?

are you running roaming user profiles by any chance? If so, your desktop is actually located on the server and your server is heavily loaded.

I dont' think it has any thing to do with Roaing profiles because each time a clients logs in All the files on the roaming profile is copied to the clients computer and any changes done to the profile will not reflect until the client logs off and the profile is then saved to the Server.

My question is where is te File being copied from? if across the network and it's a 10megbit a second network with a hub and the network is reaching capacity this does not sound unreasonable. And when the file is moved from one place on the harddrive to another it will take less time something like 10 to 15 seconds with todays hardware.

Maybe I should clarify my question.

The file copying I refer to is being done on the local machine, a W2K workstation. It's connected to my local home network, but the network is not involved. Files that are on the user's desktop that are being copied to another folder on the same machine take inordinate amounts of time, even relatively small files. Yet when copied to another folder in Windows Explorer, copy time is just seconds.

I'm can't figure out why this would happen; W2K is still somewhat new to me. I hoped one of the W2K experts here could shed some light on this.
