Why does my CD-Rom fail to respond

When I select my CD-Rom (drive I:), I get the following message:
"There is no valid media in the drive.
Make sure you have a disk inserted and
drive door closed"
with the options "Retry or Cancel"
The message occurs even when I insert the Windows 98se Updates disk,
which I am confident is not faulty.
Looking at system properties:
The Disk drive (Sony CD-Rom CDU5231)
Settings tab shows under Device status:
This device is working properly.
I have these options ticked:
Disconnect
Auto insert notification
I have unticked:
DMA
Driver Tab
Provider Microsoft
date 4-23-1999
"No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device.
To update etc."
I assume the Microsoft generic driver is all that is required.

The probable cause of the problem: I have been working with Easy CD Creator 5.0 and Drive Image 2002 with the object of creating a spanned image of my system, so far without success.
Hopefully a reader can tell me what my "tweaking activities" have upset.

Try unchecking the "disconnect" and see if that doesn't help.

Thanks for your suggestion Bmac50, I tried unchecking disconnect with no apparent result.
I bit the bullet and removed the CD-Rom from the Device manager, restarted the computer and reinstalled the CD-Rom.
I still get the same problem described above with exactly the same details. Is there any way I can easily check status of of this device i.e Good or faulty, while still installed?
Does anyone have any clues?

You don't mention a CD-RW (burner). Do you have one? Have the CD-ROM and CD-RW worked before? What OS and system specs. Jim

Please come back and let us know if your
problem is fixed and what fixed it!! [thumbsup2]

Some cd will not play in certain cdrom drives. Especially if they are burned on a home computer.

I bought a CD cleaning kit yesterday(Sunday). I have been searching the "web" this morning for information on my Sony CD 5231 re-cleaning lens etc. I'll let you know the result.

The Mitsumi Burner was installed about 18 months ago and I
have made many audio and data disks with it.
The Sony CD-Rom replaced a Creative CD3231E which I removed
because of a similar error message and because it was a
little noisy.
I am trying to determine whether the error message is
symptomatic of a faulty CD-Rom or is it a system problem?
I also bought a new BenQ(Acer)HISpeed CD-RW which I plan to
install as the primary burner, I'll continue to use the
Mitsumi drive mainly as a CD-Rom.
Thanks for your help,
Max
