If I can play DVD-r in my CD-r drive then what is the difference between DVD-r drive and CD-r drive?

You can re-encode a DVD so that it is recognizable in a CD-R format, but you cannot shove a DVD disk into a CD-R/RW player and play it.

Check you system specs again. I suspect you have at least DVD-R capabilities if you can rent a DVD movie and play it without any fiddling.
