I used to love these! I had several books as a child. Some can be done in text, but too bad they so often require graphics.

USA Weekend runs a few of these every week, although some of theirs are quite a stretch.

The first place I saw these was in Games Magazine, circa 1980.

Anyone remember that? or know of an earlier source?

Bonus points if anyone can tell me what Games called them. I try to recall that anytime I see these, but always draw a blank.

I do like these games, but I am just not as quick as some others.

I believe that this type of puzzle is called a "rebus".

If this site is legit, Rebus Games, then they've been around for quite a while.

Good Luck

A traditional rebus is more of a "pictures and/or letters arithmetic" sort of thing, where the result is a homophone of a word or phrase.

These puzzles are compositions of pictures and/or letters that result in a visual representation, often humorous, of a word of phrase.

I think the difference is enough that these puzzles should be consider different from rebus puzzles, although similar.

The name Games used for them may well have incorporated "rebus", though.

The postman actually delivered a letter to this address:

My Mother told me that as a teen-ager back in the 1920's she and her friends would communicate with letters written this way. Secret code of the day, I guess.
