I'm trying to find a way to determine who is logged into a specific server: the USER account, not the PC. The MMC 'Shared Folders' snap in is nice, but it refers to those using a folder/file.. if a user has authenticated they do not always show up in the snap in. It might be a time issue: As with PC's showing up in the network, perhaps the server needs time to update itself ( 15 min? ).
Is anybody aware of a way to get an immediate snapshot of who is actively logged into a W2K Server?

Many Thanks!

Paul

There is a set of utilities known as PSTOOLS
They will tell you who is logged onto a specific machine
or everywhere on the network!

Not sure where I got it form, but its free!
Do a search on the net

is probably what Rob7473 means. This has an application that shows who's logged on locally. Glen A. Johnson

Go to and do a search for languard network scanner. This is a freebie or a $99 version. I use the freebie, and scan the network based on ip's. This not only shows who's logged onto the network, it also shows what ports are open and such. This won't do what you want, but it's a nice little tool. Glen A. Johnson

Thanks Glen: I have the free version, tho don't play with it that much.
You would think knowing who is actually authenticated would be something of a high security issue for most large companies... I'll try the software you and Rob recommended as well: nothing like more utilities <g>

I'm sure there's a way using policies, but I've never worked with them. Anybody out there able to help kpquito out? Glen A. Johnson

Hey koquito,

you can use policy to prevent the running of specific .exe's. If you do this, you'll also need to disable the command prompt, as the aforementioned policy only works for Explorer based execution.

thanks everybody.....i was thnking about desabling MSDOS, but not about the policies..Thanks a lot.. A+, MCP, CCNA
