When I turn on my Think pad after the first windows 98 Screen comes on it sits there for the longest time then the prompt comes on

While initializing device VKD:
windows protection error. You_

I tried to restart and using the control key held down after seeing the thinkpad intro the tried to start in the safe mode. The same thing happened.

F5 gets the same safe mode start and the same thing. When I hit esc one time then a prompt came up saying that error in loading windows.

Help.

Thank you SKI for the information.

I tried to find some more about what the computer was doing. Being a laptop I don't know how to disconnect the keyboard. I tried holding the CTRL key down as the computer starts and the "thinkpad error scan" screen appeared. And scaned all systems. It listed most things simply as ok, yet

Systems board - had a red X and listed
Dev 001
err 91
FRU 3610

then it said to restart the computer so I did. This resulted in the same stop at the WINDOWS logo. After over 10 minutes with just the logo I tried the esc key and the MICROSOFT WINDOWS 98 STARTUP MENU listed. I tired 5 on the list to get the C prompt and I typed in: Scanreg/restore
It did the checking systemsfiles
After some time the C:> appeared but the keyboard was frosen. and the drive had stopped searching. The power button simply turned it off.

(Another side note. I am in south america right now and the batter has been not taking a charge. I have no access here to a new battery. I had not thought to take the battery out. I tried setting it up without the battery after this. I have been just working on direct power.)

Started up again turning the power on

I let it run windows logo appeared then stopped then started again reading hard drive again after 8 minutes the screen went blank & the hard drive stopped.

I pressed F8 listed Data error reading drive C.
Abort, Retry, Ignor, Fail?
I pressed R for retry. Something came up to fast to read.
Then it said
While initializing device configuring Windows protection error You restart
Control alt Deleat did restart again tried windows screen startup menu came

Warning windows did not complete ...

before I could do anything the logo came again

while initializing device VK_

Nothing control alt deleat gave no response

Did I just Kill my laptop? Do I need to find a substitute keyboard? Help. Because I am traveling in South America it is a real challenge to find parts etc. Yet internet places are very available. This IBM Thinkpad is a referbished model 600E.

I really would appreciate help.

Do you have an external keyboard, or just the one built in... I've seen this once before, it was a loose keyboard connection. If the only keyboard is the one built on the laptop, you might seek a local service center to reconnect the keyboard for you... Laptops are tricky to disassemble.
