Ok, I need a little help here. A little background, I am a programmer (also DB designer and developer), but no a SQL Administrator. Know my way around SQL but not an expert on the Admin side.

I have been put in charge of purchasing SQL Server that will be used for a webserver which will be running a couple apps that will hit SQL. Which version should I purchase?

Money is somewhat of an issue. Can I get buy with getting a standard version with 5 CAL licenses? Or what are the rules on the Windows Business Server that comes with SQL server?

Any help is appreciated.

SQL Server Licensing is a pain. There's a nice little FAQ here:

Personally, I just buy the standard edition and license it per processor. Makes it all very neat and clean. Of course if you only need a couple of CALs then it might be cheaper to go another route, but we've found that once we started implementing a SQL server that we're found many more ways to use it than we originially intended on, so our CAL requirements would go up.

If you will be having people access the web app over the internet then you will need to purchase per processor licensing.
