which release of MSDE 2000 should I download and is Microsoft's site the only place to download it?

What you need to do is go to the sqlserver service pack page. If you download the Service pack "it is" an MSDE2K install that has the service pack slipsteamed into it.

I cant remember the exact page but it isn't too hard to find on the microsoft.com/sql site

PS read the HTML help file to do the install.
You do need to run it with switches.!
