I still use WIN98 (2nd edition) on my private PC - as I often have a blue screen error with it
I now decided to buy a new operating system.

But which?

First I wanted to buy Windows XP but the retailer said, that this system is to young and many
programs (especially elder ones) do not run under XP.
As I still have VFP 5.0 and VFP 6.0 I am now afraid to get new problems with the new OS.

He recommended Windows Millenium 2000 as a system of high stability.

The most things I am interested in are, that my Foxpro will remain to run and beside that
I use LOTUS 1-2-3 Millenium (which I like much more than EXCEL btw.) and of course
want to use furtheron.

If you had the chance that I have - what would you do?
Is there a big difference between XP Home and XP Professional?

Thanks for any advice.

Klaus

HI Klaus..
I am using W2000/WinMe/Win98 under one computer. I use a utility (freeware) to partition the harddisk and that works excellent so far ( a year or so and not even once it failed.).

2. My W2000 is my prefered development environment. VFP7 works sweetly with it.

3. WinMe and Win98 is my testing ground. WinMe is very steady and solid. Win98 BDOS appears at times. The reason is not likely VFP but the accomanying software installed.. printer drivers.. scanner drivers etc.. often screw it up.

My choice for a development will be W2000.
Hope this helps you :) ramani :-9

I wouldn't go with Millenium. I would go with XP pro. Been using it since it came out (with all the patches). And FPW2.6 (with the fast cpu patch), VFP5.0, VFP6.0 and VFP7.0 all run fine on that.

For development, either XP Pro or Win2K Pro.

Win 98/ME are okay for testing but definitely not for development.

Also be sure to have at least 128mb of RAM - it makes a big difference with VFP.

German12,
I've been using XP since it was in Beta, with FPW2.6, FPD2.6, VFP 7 (which was Beta then also...) without any problem. In my experices with Windows (which has been EVERY version since 2.0) XP is THE most stable version I have ever seen. Even when it was in Beta, it was a better windows than ME, 98se, NT 4.0, and in many ways, 2000.
From your message "First I wanted to buy Windows XP but the retailer said, that this system is to young and many
programs (especially elder ones) do not run under XP." This is an uninformed statement. XP is an extension of 2000, effectively making it "2000 v2.0" It is an improvment to 2000, not an abborition...
My vote, go with either XPHome or Pro, really only matters if your using multiple CPUs, and SCSI drives that you want to use dynamic volumes. Otherwise, the two are the same. (Well, okay, there are some network enhancments for XPPro as well, but... you get my point). Under no case would I use ME, or anything prior to it. 2000Pro at a minimum. If you're going to change opperating systems, you might as well join the future...

Best Regards,
Scott

These people are giving you the right idea. Consumer Windows is good for a test environment but you do not want to use it for your development environment. I have used Windows NT Workstation, Windows 2000 and XP PRO. XP is still fairly new to me and I prefer 2000 Pro for that reason. What I have done in XP is working just as well as in NT. XP reacts just a little different to some things. It isn't bad. It is just different. If it is not out of reach, go for 256 Meg of memory. It will sing to you.

Would like to to thank all of you for your very convincing arguments.

All I have to do now is, to decide between XP and Win2000....I think I it will be XP although the difference
is not as great - but I also heard from other people that they had not crashes since they are using XP - the main
idea is perhaps to use a fresh formatted hard-disk for a new operating-system instead of installation over an
existing system that's what my experience in that matter is.
All of you eased my decision.

Thank you very much.

I've been using WinXP for a while now on one of my computers. Recently changed back to Win2000. Reason? Ran pretty stable, but, had too many quirks! Far too many 'Opt-in' problems, and far too many programs which need to be repurchaed (away form development, things like Norton's system works, Money 2000 had to be purchased again as only the newest versions ar WP compatible).
Networking gave me hazzle, never did with Win2000.

All in all, WinXP is too intrusive for me.

Hope this helps

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I run an small business. I've been in industry for a long long time now, I never had encounter any troubles with the operating systems of windows even the start of 3.0 up to Windows/XP.

It is only a matter of studying the behavior of any release version of windows. Any windows operationg systems is the most and effective way in handling in small or large scale businesses.

Windows is a great for me ever since they make my life colourful and stable with my future plans and family.

Hope this will give some ideas. Oh, by the way. if you are choosing HOME/PROFESSIONAL version I prefer the professional by all means.

MOISES THE GREAT!
