Which motherboards will win xp run on?

I'm wondering if there is a way to tell if a motherboard will allow a win xp install or not, other than simply trying. I do charity work, put pcs together from donated parts, so any guide might save some time. M\soft has a list of hardware that is compatible but i have seen lots of items not on that list that run in xp and i've installed win xp on motherboards that are older than another motherboard that wont accept win xp.

So i thought i would ask you people. We are talking pretty much about P2 and P3 motherboards and their AMD counterparts of the same era. But after that, is it a hit or miss thing or are there some tell-tale signs that would be good to know. Like win xp likes intel chipsets over via or sis chipsets, or some other fact that im not aware of?

Would there be a list of motherboards that work in win xp somewhere?

Any thoughts, knowledge, or ideas on this matter would be appreciated. Hoping i put this in the right place, could have placed it in hardware area?

thanks

I translated one of them and, lo and behold, a few here have the very same motherboard, the 748LMRT, and they are debating wether or not to try out sp2 and one of them already has sp2 installed!

Of course i havent read them all, so i am not debating your findings at this point, lol. On the other hand, you will always find a few people who dont like pc chips boards, that is a given. Then you will find people like me, who have sold or donated plenty of pc chips boards and find they are great but not being able to install win xp isnt so great. But i certainly can say from my experience that i have run into a lot of old pc chips boards that are still running fine! Gee, Linney, come to think of it, i guess i do have something to say about these older mobos.

Last night i read a post somewhere where the person was talking about this same pc chips board, the 748LMRT, and
he\she said to change the ram. So i am going to try that, again, as i already did once.
Also, the 741 is almost exactly the same board as the 748, same drivers from pc chips.

I think there is a possibility to install the XP, maybe with APIC turned off (F5 when it asked you to hit F6 for RAID drivers comes to mind)...

and I do believe that that is the Nitty-Gritty that is hindering the install, more than anything else... I remember reading something to that affect somewhere (just don't rember exactly where)...

Also turning the APIC off in the BIOS, setting the Plug-n-Play OS to NO... Try to set the HD's (just for the Install) to PIO MODE (slow but may get you over the hurdle, I had to do this to one AMD Board)...

thanks, Ben, will try it all!

BadBigBen, thanks for the follow up. I have been too busy or too lazy, probably too lazy. Will get it done this week and let you know. I really thought your suggestions were worth looking into, just laziness on my end is all.

thanks
