Which is a better processor for gaming: a Pentium 4 2.4A GHz or an Athlon XP 2600+ Barton? Does one has a significant performance advantage (in terms of gaming) from the other?

It's the graphics card that is the real engine when you talk about gaming and so is the most important part when it comes to differances in actual gaming performance.
If this is a 800fsb P4 2.4 then the CPU's are almost matched, the P4 better for number crunching (video editting etc) and the Athlon maybe better in games but a VERY close call.
I'm not saying the CPU doesn't make a differance but only slight, maybe a fcouple of hundred points in a 3D benchmark when going up a CPU speed.
On the other hand going one grapghics card up eg:
Say going from a Radeon 128mb Radeon 9200 to a 9600 could DOUBLE your 3D benchmark results (100% higher)
Likely these two CPU's on equivelent platforms, with the same graphics card would be seperated by less than 3%

Just wanted to point out that this is not a gaming or helpdesk site, and asking these types of questions is walking a thin line.

However, I agree with paparazi. When comparing both of those CPU's, you're not going to be able to see the difference in performance, except when benchmarking. Instead of worrying about which one, go with the better price and focus more on the video card you purchase.

is a good place to start when comparing performance.

Thanks for the help guys! I'm sorry if I have to ask those questions as I wanted a more technical answer to them. I figured I could ask here because of the many informative, technical forum members.

You might try asing gaming questions at this web site:

They both have forums and talk about building gaming rigs.

I think the Video card is very important. Many people are using the Athlon 64 these days to build a gaming rig.

Toms Hardware

has some good benchmarks on a wide assortment of video cards:
